Cider 4.0.30
Settings has been rebuilt from the ground up, and first-run setup has been redesigned to match. Beyond that, there is a playback speed control with reverb, Apple Music's own lyric translations, a gradient mesh background for Immersive, and a lot of smoothing around track changes and the queue.
Settings and setup
- A brand new Settings. Settings has been rebuilt as a two-pane window with a category list and search on the left and the page on the right. It follows your accent color, uses the same glass and motion as the rest of the app, and collapses to a single pane on narrow windows.
- A new Tweaks page. Small, niche options for the player bar, sidebar, search, grids, artwork, Immersive, lyrics and the window now live in one place under Look & feel, each with a preview of what it changes.
- A redesigned first-run setup. The welcome flow is now a single card with an animated scene for each step, a searchable language list that suggests popular languages and marks your system language, and music that plays while you set up (with a mute button).
- Settings search now matches whole words, ranks results by what your query names, shows matching pages, and focuses with Ctrl+F.
- The Visual page is now called Appearance.
- The Apple Music profile summary shows your profile photo, membership age and the Apple Music wordmark.
- The Updates page has a new status header, and the Updates row shows the current update status at a glance.
- Settings sub-options now open as their own tiles instead of an indented list.
- Crossfade, Automix and gapless each have their own card under Mixing.
- Lyrics settings have been reorganized, and track and language override lists are easier to manage. The language rule dialog has been rebuilt to match the rest of Settings.
- Scrobbler accounts are laid out like the rest of Settings, and signing out now asks for confirmation.
- The Sid settings page has been restyled with a new greeting that walks through what Sid can do.
- The startup page option only appears when Cider is set to open to it.
- The glaze picker is available on the Layout step of setup.
- The CSS snippet editor now opens in its own window.
Playback and queue
- Playback speed with reverb. Turn on Playback speed control in Audio settings to get a speed button in the player with Slowed, Normal and Sped up presets, a fine slider, Keep pitch and an optional room reverb. Your chosen speed now sticks across track changes, gapless and crossfades.
- The progress bar no longer keeps running from the previous song and then snaps back to 0:00 when a new track starts, and it no longer jumps back after a seek.
- Skipping tracks is smoother, with much less work done in the frame where the song changes.
- The queue has new motion: rows slide in and out cleanly, reorders no longer jitter or cross, and jumping to a song flies it into the Now Playing slot.
- Selecting several queue rows and dragging them now moves them as one block in the order you selected. Previously some selections could land out of order.
- A song queued twice is now treated as two separate entries.
- Reordering songs below the next track no longer cancels a crossfade or Automix transition that was already lined up.
- Fixed audio being briefly unmuted before the fade-in when starting playback.
- Releasing a held Next button no longer also skips the track.
Lyrics
- Lyric translations and pronunciation from Apple Music. Apple's own line translations are shown when available, and a new Show pronunciation option adds romanization under each word. Both can be toggled from the translate button in the lyrics header.
Sid
- Sid can use Apple Intelligence on macOS. On Macs with Apple Intelligence turned on, you can choose it as the engine Sid thinks with, alongside Gemma.
Appearance
- Gradient mesh Immersive background. A new background type for Immersive, ported from Cider for Android, that drifts with the song's tempo and pulses on the beat. Requires WebGPU and follows the Immersive visual sliders.
- New Glaze setting in Appearance to pick the edge highlight on glass surfaces: Diffused, Liquid Glass, Minimal or None.
- Album pages and chrome now follow Apple Music's own color rules, so light album covers stay readable in dark mode and selected rows are no longer a solid slab of the cover color.
- Artists without a full-screen hero image now get Apple Music's profile header with a centered avatar on a blurred halo, instead of a stretched square photo.
- Album and playlist buttons have new animations, including the Add to Library button morphing from plus to check.
- Dialogs now animate when they close.
- New experiment: Aura, which tints the app background with the colors of the current page (Advanced > Experimental features).
Fixes
- Fixed native context menu icons sometimes going missing for good after a launch.
- Fixed flat edges and a double outline on rounded liquid glass surfaces at large player corner radii.
- Fixed the pinned release on artist pages showing "Invalid Date" for featured playlists, and album dates showing a day early.
- Fixed empty hero banners showing on some pages.
- Fixed album meta chips being hard to read with Match page to artwork, and some dark album pages being too light for white text in light theme.
- Fixed the album release countdown not lining up with the top buttons.
- Picking a search result now clears the search box.
- Fixed button layout shift on hover and focus styling inconsistencies.
Changed or removed
- RPC API web access now needs your permission. Websites can no longer talk to Cider's RPC API from your browser unless you allow them. When a site asks for access, the consent dialog offers to grant its address, and you can add or remove allowed websites per token in Settings > Connections > Extension security. Apps on your own computer, Cider's own websites such as taproom.cider.sh, and Cider Remote on your local network are unaffected.
- The old advanced playback rate toggle and the podcast speed row have been replaced by Playback speed control in Audio settings. If you had playback rate turned on, it carries over.
- Automix pauses while playback speed is not 1×, and reverb is not available with Dolby Atmos passthrough. Speed can't be changed for live radio or music videos.
- The "No landing page on focus" search setting has been removed.
- The Podcasts sidebar toggle now lives in Tweaks, under Sidebar and navigation.
