Cider 4.0.32

Radio Sound gives playback the tone of a broadcast, and adding a song can send its artwork across to the sidebar. On Windows, the Widevine repair from 4.0.31 now reaches older installs and the Microsoft Store build.

Radio Sound

A new Radio Sound control sits in Audio settings and in the volume menu. It gives music the warm, full sound of a radio broadcast, and it works alongside any listening mode. It is not available while Dolby Atmos passthrough is on.

  • FM Radio has a general station, plus Top 40, Rock, Hip-Hop & R&B, and Smooth.
  • HD Radio has a general station, plus Top 40, Smooth, and Classical & Jazz.
  • Once a station is on, Amplify strengthens the tone and Processing sets how hard the station's compression works.
  • FM stations also have Stereo blend, which narrows the image the way a receiver does, and Limit bandwidth, which rolls off the highs above 15 kHz the way a real FM broadcast does.

Adding to your library

  • Genie. Under Accessibility, in Motion, Add animation offers Genie alongside Pulse. Pulse stays the default. With Genie, adding from a button, a menu or the player lifts a copy of the artwork, arcs it to its place in the sidebar, and bounces that icon.
  • Adding to your library flies to Recently Added or Songs. Adding to a playlist flies to that playlist. Favoriting a song flies to Favorite Songs.
  • Adding one song to several playlists sends a staggered copy to each. A playlist inside a collapsed folder tips the folder open, catches the song, and closes again, without shifting the sidebar.
  • Reduced motion keeps the pulse, and so does a click when nothing on screen can receive the artwork.

Widevine

4.0.31 switched a broken Widevine over to PlayReady and offered a restart once a newer copy was found. This release finishes that for the installs it could not reach.

  • You do not need a new Windows installer. On an older install, the same repair arrives with the app update. Cider stages a newer Widevine and asks you to restart onto it.
  • The Microsoft Store build was loading Widevine from a folder Apple Music rejects. Cider now keeps that profile in a normal folder, sets the rejected copy aside, and asks you to restart onto one Apple Music accepts. A copy the updater puts back is set aside again.
  • A PC without PlayReady stops, instead of skipping through the queue. The notice says Apple Music cannot play until Widevine is updated, and Cider asks you to restart when the update is ready. Playback does not walk ahead to the next song.
  • The PlayReady notice, and the notice that your system paused Cider in the background, now fit inside the window.
  • The first song is ready to license a little sooner, because that work starts before you press play.

Language

  • Icelandic is listed in Settings, in first-run setup, and in the language picker shown before setup. Strings that are not translated yet fall back to English.

Windows

  • The first launch is centered, on the main screen, and the window opens a little larger. A window you have already placed comes back where you left it.
  • Double-clicking the title bar maximizes and restores the window, and the title bar has the usual Windows system menu. Dragging the title bar still moves the window.
  • Right-click menus use the modern Windows menu where the system supports it, including the tray menu and the tray player's More menu. The older menu remains where that style is not available.
  • Menus stay below a taskbar that sits at the top of the screen. The tray menu closes with Alt+Tab or the Windows key, and the tray player's More menu sits on its button and closes if you click it again.
  • The taskbar progress bar updates only when the bar would actually move.

Defaults

New installs, and any of these you have never set yourself, now start from a slightly different look.

  • Album and playlist pages match their artwork.
  • Immersive opens on the gradient mesh background.
  • The Solarium immersive layout uses a soft feathered mask, a 4:3 frame, and the queue in a drawer.
  • The floating player has rounder corners.

Fixes

  • A missing saved tab no longer blanks the window. If the tab Cider remembered is gone, it keeps one it can show, so pages still open after a restart.
  • Taproom sign-in says more clearly what went wrong. If you recently moved from the Microsoft Store, the message asks you to sign in with Taproom again so the old license can be replaced. A missing token, a token Cider could not accept, and a sign-in that could not be saved are each their own message.
  • When listening modes, Radio Sound and the room reverb are all off, that processing stays out of the path, so ordinary playback does less work.
  • On Windows, the media controls no longer keep a silent player running underneath the song.

Security

  • A page or a plugin can no longer write files, or create folders, outside Cider's own data folders.
  • Cider's local hello check no longer sends back the key the app uses for its own API.
