Cider 4.0.40

Community lyrics are no longer one person's copy of a song. Translations and pronunciations can be added on top, edits can be suggested to the owner, and lyrics can be remixed into a new version. The lyrics editor is rebuilt around a timeline, and it can suggest timings from the song you are working on.

Community Lyrics

The page for the lyrics you contribute has moved into Settings, under Lyrics, and is now called Community Lyrics.

  • Your profile is at the top, with the number of songs you have contributed and how often they were played.
  • Your Lyrics lists every song you shared. Each one opens to its versions, its history, its translations and pronunciations, and the suggestions people have sent you.
  • Suggestions you sent and Translations and pronunciations list your work on other people's lyrics.
  • The leaderboard shows the top contributors, with their pictures and flags.
  • Show Your Lyrics in the settings sidebar pins a Your Lyrics tile under Account. It shows how many suggestions are waiting for you, and clicking it opens Community Lyrics. Once your lyrics have been viewed for a week, a quiet line behind the tile shows how often, with the total for the last 30 days.

Translations and pronunciations

Translations and pronunciations are now their own layers on top of community lyrics, so anyone can add one without changing the lyrics underneath.

  • The editor has a Layers mode. Pick a translation or pronunciation, choose the language from a searchable list, and write it line by line against the lyrics.
  • Drafts are kept between sessions, and you can delete a layer you published.
  • You can write layers before the lyrics are published. They are published with the lyrics.
  • When the lyrics change, lines a layer no longer matches are marked as needing an update, instead of showing the wrong text.

Suggested edits and remixes

  • Suggest an edit to lyrics you did not write. The owner reviews it and can accept or reject it, and you are credited when it is accepted. Suggestions that are not reviewed expire after 30 days.
  • The review shows every changed line in place: its number and time, the lines around it, and what changed in its text, timing, background vocals, singer or song part. It also says when a suggestion was made against an older version and cannot be accepted as it is. The owner can still reject it.
  • Remix makes your own version of someone else's lyrics, with credit to the original.
  • Suggest, remix and add a layer are all offered from the lyrics platter, on the song that is playing.

Importing a TTML file

  • Drag a TTML file onto Cider to open it in the editor, or use Import in the editor.
  • If the file includes translations or pronunciations, Cider offers to publish them as layers.
  • Credit and note lines can be found and removed before you submit, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean lines can be split into sung characters.
  • A file that has word timings but is marked as line-synced gets a warning, with a button to mark it word-synced.

Your own uploads

  • Songs you uploaded to iCloud, and songs in your library, find community lyrics by name, artist, album and length, instead of only by ID. Someone else with the same song uploaded sees the same lyrics.
  • The Upload tab says what is keeping Submit from working.

Your contributor profile

  • Add a picture. Position and zoom it before it is saved. Cider shrinks it as needed to fit.
  • Add the country or region you are from. The list is searchable and suggests your Apple Music country first. "Prefer not to say" keeps it hidden.
  • If your profile is from before these options existed, a card in Community Lyrics invites you to update it. You can dismiss it.
  • Your picture and flag appear on the leaderboard, in suggestion reviews, and in the version list on the lyrics platter. The platter byline shows your picture.

The lyrics editor

The editor is rebuilt.

  • A ribbon layout groups the tools for each mode, and the issues in your lyrics are one click away. Every mode fills the window.
  • Playback controls match the glass player, including playback speed, which now goes down to 0.25x.
  • Undo and redo.
  • The TTML view is a code editor. It marks problems where they are, can tidy the layout, and can be undone.
  • A live preview plays your lyrics the way Immersive does.
  • The playing line is followed in every mode, and sung words light up as you edit.
  • Editing no longer reshapes your file. Paragraphs you did not touch keep their exact text, along with the file's time format, singers, song parts, syllables, songwriters and background vocals.

Timing

  • The Time view has a timeline under the lyrics. Drag words to move them, drag an edge to retime one, and select several with Ctrl, Shift or a box to move or stretch them together. Overlapping vocals stack.
  • Edge drags work three ways: Squeeze takes time from the words beside it, Push moves the words after it along, and Free changes only that word. Fix overlaps tidies up anything that runs into the next word.
  • Right-click to snap to the music, move to the playhead, close gaps, space words evenly or by syllable, copy timing to a repeated line, or remove word timing.
  • Line sync is a table of every line with its start and end time, and the timeline can be resized.
  • Timing suggestions. The editor listens to the song and suggests timings for a line, a word, or the whole song, marking lines it is unsure of. It follows the beat and the voice, and a repeated line takes its pacing from the times you already set by hand.
  • Quick analyze listens to the whole song at four times speed, muted, then puts playback back where it was.

Lyrics on screen

  • The lyrics platter is simpler: one byline for the source, with its options in a settings-style panel. The searching and no-lyrics states are one quiet note.
  • After a seek, lyrics wait at the new position instead of running ahead and snapping back.
  • Lines no longer pile up and then jump apart when the player opens.
  • Arabic word-synced lyrics stay joined.
  • The lyrics pill no longer stays on screen after you change the source.

Albums and playlists

  • Track rows have favorite and add-to-library buttons on hover. They also show whether a song is already in your library or a favorite.
  • Selected rows share the Cider glaze, joined across a run of selected rows.
  • An album's record label shows as a badge with the label's artwork.
  • Shelves on pages that match their artwork use Apple's darker second tone, and the artwork glow sits under the page header without washing out its text.

Performance

  • Cider starts sooner on Windows. The browser starts earlier, proxy discovery no longer holds up the first load, and the app's code is reused from the last launch instead of being read again.
  • Settings opens faster.
  • Less background work while you listen. The library refresh only redraws when something changed, Discord presence backs off while Discord is closed, and the library loads its larger lists when Cider is idle.
  • Shelf edge fades follow the scroll instead of snapping on, and are skipped on PCs without graphics acceleration.

Content restrictions

  • Cider follows the content restrictions on your Apple account, including explicit content, and you can manage them from Cider.

Sign-in

  • Only a sign-in made for Cider is accepted as a Cider session. A Taproom token meant for something else gets a clear message instead.
  • If you signed in before October 2024, you may be asked to sign in once more.

Fixes

  • The equalizer no longer cuts the audio after you change it. Changes to Q and frequency apply in place, and curves that only cut work.
  • Turning gapless back off no longer leaves a seek hanging for about 20 seconds.
  • Songs in the queue are credited to the album or playlist they came from.
  • Community lyrics notices use Cider notifications.
